Workshop 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. | In-person only

Please join the Appalachian STEPS Network as we partner with The Justin Initiative for our annual fall industry safety forum. This safety forum is designed for EHS professionals in all facets of the gas and oil industry. Registration is free, but required, and lunch is included.  Wilkes University is providing 3 PDHs and .3 CEUs for those attending.

Key topics for the day include:

  • Why now: the four forces converging on high-hazard, high-turnover industries
  • The gap between falling injury rates and rising fatal risk, and what it means for your programs
  • CLEARLY WORTHY: a new framework for assessing where critical risk lives and building the culture that catches it
  • Classifying critical risk: six lenses for spotting exposures that could kill or permanently harm
  • How cognitive bias shapes safety decisions at the individual, organizational, and leadership levels
  • Designing safety systems that work for every brain, including neurodivergent workers
  • Practical takeaways attendees can start applying the next day

Our speaker, Aron Yellott, MS, CSP, ASP, MCPC, is an EHS executive, consultant and educator with more than 15 years of experience helping organizations strengthen safety leadership, human-centered safety and serious injury and fatality prevention. She specializes in building psychological safety, amplifying worker voice and creating environments where people have the trust and confidence to speak up, question risk and stop work before someone gets hurt.  Before entering the EHS profession, Aron spent more than a decade teaching psychology and sociology — a foundation that continues to shape how she helps organizations understand human behavior inside complex work systems. She is the founder of The Justin Initiative, created in memory of her husband, Justin, whose death following a workplace exposure transformed safety into a deeply personal mission.

The Appalachian STEPS Network is a chapter of the National STEPS Network.  STEPS is an acronym for Service, Transmission, Exploration, & Production Safety.  We are a group of 900 HSE professionals in the oil & gas industry who meet to network and learn.  The Appalachian STEPS Network chapter encompasses the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  The goal of this organization is to promote health, safety, and environmental improvement in the Appalachian Basin and to foster a work environment that relies upon open communication and trust.
