Reasonable Suspicion Training and
Addressing Substance Use and Mental Illness in a Virtual World
 
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the landscape of the workplace in 2020 and the foreseeable future.  More employees are working remotely now than ever before.  These new challenges have led to a significant increase in employee substance use and mental illness across the U.S. and abroad.  Substance use and mental illness are sensitive topics that can be difficult for employers to address at any time, but remote employees present a unique challenge, especially as it pertains to “reasonable suspicion” drug and alcohol testing.

PART 1 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This two-hour virtual training teaches supervisors and managers how to appropriately identify and effectively respond to suspected employee impairment. Knowledge checks are peppered throughout to increase content retention and a case vignette concludes this training to increase participant comfort and confidence with application.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
1) Reiterate the four rules for responding to suspected employee impairment
2) Identify personal barriers that inhibit the reporting process
3) Discuss the most common drugs of abuse and their signs of impairment
4) Describe (and demonstrate) an effective, non-confrontational conversation with an employee suspected of impairment.

PART 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This 60-minute virtual seminar equips employers with an essential framework to effectively address employee substance use and mental illness in a virtual world.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
1) Identify changes in a remote employee’s appearance, behavior and performance that are concerning.
2) Effectively respond to employee problems while maintaining professional boundaries.
3) Maximize the benefit of an EAP for employee illness prevention and treatment.
4) Determine what changes should be made to an existing drug and alcohol policy and testing procedures.
